Flexible Foam Systems



Polyurethane flexible foams are used in many seating and cushioning applications. Northstar Polymers carry various open-cell flexible foam formulations for molded foam products and may other applications of small and large quantity requirements. Please refer to Microcellular Foams for closed-cell high-density flexible foams.



MPA-F03A : 3 LBS/ft3 Density Open-Cell Flexible Foam, Fast Curing, For Light Molded Foam Products, General Seating Products, Cushions



MPA-F03A is designed to make molded flexible foam parts/sheets/dies/blocks. A small quantity may possibly be processed manually. The components are low-viscosity stable liquid at room temperature. The free-rise density of the foam is approximately 3.3 pounds per cubic foot. The cell structure is mostly open-cell. It is recommended to physically crushing soon after foam is made to stabilize the molded shape. This is an MDI base water-blown polyether system, and it does not use auxiliary blowing agents



MPP-F04C: 4 LBS/ft3 Density Open-Cell Flexible Foam With Medium Ease Process, Hand-Pourable for Small Parts, Molded Seat Cushions, Custom Motorcycle Seating



MPP-F04C is designed to make molded flexible foam parts/sheets/dies/blocks by hand-mixing with basic tools or with dispensing equipment. The components are low viscosity stable liquid at room temperature. These properties are ideal in making small custom foam products such as seating, padding, cushioning, many others. The free-rise density of the foam is 4.15 pounds per cubic foot. The cell structure is open-cell with partial closed-cell. This formulation is an MDI base water-blown polyether system, and it does not use ozone-depleting auxiliary blowing agents. MPP-F07B: 6.5 LBS/ft3 Density Open-Cell Flexible Foam With Easier Process , Long Pot Life, Hand-Pourable, Good for Cast-In-Place, Molded Seat Cushions, Custom Motorcycle Seating



This foam formulation is designed to make molded flexible foam parts/sheets/dies/blocks by hand-mixing with very basic tools such as a cup and stir stick. The components are low-viscosity stable liquid at room temperature. These properties are ideal in small scale productions for custom foam applications such as custom seating, padding, cushioning, many others. The free-rise density of the foam is 6 to 7 pounds per cubic foot. The cell structure is partially open-cell, and may be made to open-cell structure by physically crushing soon after foam is made. This is an MDI base water-blown polyether system, and it does not use auxiliary blowing agents



VEF-152 : Polyether-MDI Based Viscoelastic Foam, Variable Ratio, Low Viscosity Components, Hand-Pourable, For Custom Seating Products, Custom Molded Foam Products



VEF-152 is a 2-part polyurethane foam casting resin system that makes open-cell flexible foam with viscoelastic property with the following attributes for a variety of cushioning and other custom applications.


• The cured foam has a slow recovery after an indentation is made.

• The foam stays flexible at a very lower temperature.

• The component materials are low viscosity liquid at room temperature. The pot-life is above 25 seconds, which allows small amounts to be batched manually.

• The consistency of the foam is easily modified by adjusting the mixing ratios between part-A/B components. VEF-152 provides a range of foam consistency to be adjusted by varying the mixing ratio between the part-A/ part-B components.


The recommended mixing ratio range is between 100:260 and 100:300 = part-A: part-B by weight. A higher part-B ratio makes foam with slower recovery rate and smaller compression deflection. This set of properties makes VEF-152 a more user-friendly viscoelastic foam formulation material for manufacturers of custom seat cushions and other specialty products.



FFM-1 : 9 LBS/ft3 Density Very Firm Flexible Foam, Low Viscosity Components, Hand-Pourable, For Custom Packaging for Heavy Products, Bumpers, Protective Pads, Archery Targets



This foam formulation is particularly designed to make flexible but firm open-cell foam by either hand-mixing or machine casting. This material may be suitable for products that require some load bearing property but need to be flexible. The firmness of this material is similar to that of microcellular foams, but it is lighter than microcellular foams. This material may also be suitable for some bumper or vibration dampening parts. The components are liquid at room temperature. It has relatively long pot life (40 seconds) for a flexible foam material, so it is easier to handle by a manual hand-mixing method. This material can be open-cast into a slab for farther fabrication or molded in a compression mold. The free rise density of the foam is 8.5 pounds per cubic foot, and the cell structure is mostly open-cell.
