Northstar Polymers is a polyurethane specialist

Northstar Polymers formulates, manufactures, and supplies a variety of polyurethane resins. Our formulation range includes polyurethane gel, foam, pressure-sensitive adhesives, non-foam high-performance casting resin systems as well as room-temperature-cure casting systems, prepolymers used as precursor materials in sealants/adhesives/coatings/molding compounds, and other raw materials for a wide range of polyurethane products. We also work with product designers and engineers to custom-formulate for specific applications.

Topics

Northstar Polymers continuously develop unique polyurethane formulations for the ever-changing market demands. Specialized in making unique formulations for unique applications, Northstar Polymers is experienced in a wide range of applications with various quantity requirements. The Topics below headline some of the developments put us into a unique position as a polyurethane system house. These formulations introduced here are available to our current and potential customers.

Room-Temp-Pourable Formulas
For Custom Skate Wheels

Northstar Polymers has developed a series of PTMEG based polyurethane casting resin formulations that can be mixed and poured at room temperature. The formulation allows longer pot life to allow manual mixing and degas at room temperature. The resin is then cast into a heated mold and posted cured in an oven. The physical properties of these formulas are close to those of the high-performance PTMEG formulations.

Sticky Pad - Re-Useable PSA Materials

Soft and sticky materials used in cellphone holders, and lint removers can be made of polyurethane gel compounds. Polyurethane based sticky pads can be formulated without using tackifier additive, which is a type of chemical to make polymer materials to be sticky. Thus the sticky pad products made of polyurethane gel compounds are intrinsically sticky inside and outside. Once the surface is contaminated with dusts and oil, the user can wash off the surface and the product will be sticky again. Cut surfaces of polyurethane sticky pads are also sticky. Processing polyurethane gel compounds do not involve drying out solvent carrier or need air or moisture to cure. It can be made into practically any thickness. Most of the polyurethane gel formulations can be processed at or near room temperature. The curing rate can be accelerated by addition of catalyst and processing at an elevated temperature. This makes polyurethane gel based sticky pad materials an ideal material choice for many specialty applications. Northstar Polymers offers GK-7 and GK-22 formulations for sticky pad making applications. GK-7 formulation has stickiness of commonly marketed cellphone holders and non-invasive wall-tack products. GK-22R formulation makes softer/sticker products. Both formulations are made in such a way that the processor can adjust the stickiness of final products by simply adjusting the mixing ratios between the given part-A/part-B component materials.

New Low Tack Soft Gel Elastomer Series

Unlike conventional soft grade polyurethane gel elastomer formulas, these formulations create low tack surface molded products with high elongation. Easy-processing, lower tooling costs, and reasonable pricing of these formulations provide the molders overall cost advantage over TPE and silicone gel materials.

Viscoelastic Foam

VEF-121 is our latest version of polyurethane open-cell flexible foam with viscoelastic property for a variety of cushioning and other custom applications. This formulation can be processed at room temperature, and may be processed manually without using a dispensing machine for smaller shot-size products at a lower production rate.

The cured foam has a very low deflection against a compression force. Foam recovers slowly after load is removed. The foam stays flexible at very lower temperature.

The component materials are low viscosity liquid at room temperature. The pot-life is above 25 seconds, which allows small amounts to be batched manually. VEF-121 provides a range of foam consistency to be adjusted by varying the mixing ratio between the part-A/ part-B components. The recommended mixing ratio range is between 100:260 and 100:300 = part-A: part-B by weight. A higher part-B ratio makes foam with slower recovery rate and smaller compression deflection.

flexible bonding agent for recycled foam products and particle bonding applications

This two-part moisture-cure polyurethane adhesive system is designed to be used with recycled ground rubber, polymer foam, polymer beads, as well as other particles such as cork granules, wood and pulp fiber/particles/powder to make various recycled foam and other bonded particle products.

Northstar Polymers' new particle bonding system consists of 2 different moisture-cure prepolymer components. By changing the blending ratio, the user can vary the flexibility of the end product. A higher amount of MPA-221 will produce a more flexible product. A higher amount of MNB-013 will produce a more rigid product.

Light Structural Foam with Flexibility and Less Sawdust from Cutting

This foam formulation is made to service applications where light density foam with some structural supporting and impact mitigation properties are needed. The cured foam has some load bearing capacity as well as some flexibility. This set of properties avoids cracking from impact forces. The foam flexes and then comes back to the original shape. Because of the flexibility, machining on this foam creates much less amount of fine dusts/particles.

The mixing ratio is 1: 1 by volume. The viscosity range is reasonably low at room temperature. This will allow use of low-cost fixed-ratio dispensing equipment for cast-in-place foam application.
