Northstar Polymers is a division of Tandem Products, Inc. The core business of Tandem Products started as a part of the chemical business divisions in Cargill, who was (and still is) the largest privately owned corporation in the US.
In early 1960s, while Cargill exported bulk products, large quantities of bulk particles running through steel structures such as chutes, spouts, and pipes were suffering severe wear. The AR steel liners were wearing off very quickly from millions of bushels of corn, wheat, and other grains passing through. These wear problems were costing Cargill large amounts of money and time.
Cargill commissioned a part of their chemical products division to develop a material that protects their structure and equipment. In 1965, a team of chemists developed the high-performance polyurethane anti-abrasion liner, which significantly reduced the wear issue. The polyurethane liner material was named "Rhino Hyde".
Rhino Hyde liners were used throughout Cargill’s export/import facilities globally. Soon, their competitors started buying Rhino Hyde liners to their facilities. Then mining companies and other industries started using Rhino Hyde Products. In the mid 1980’s Cargill decided to spin off the division to the two chemists who were core members of the Rhino Hyde development team. In 1987, Tandem Products is established by these chemists after acquiring the Rhino Hyde Products Group.
The founders of Tandem Products were polymer chemists. Aside from developing new formulations for the in-house applications the company started selling the polyurethane raw materials to other businesses unrelated to the core markets for Rhino Hyde products. Northstar Polymers business was launched in 1997 to service the customers for polyurethane resin raw material products.
With over 20 years of formulation experiences of developing many different formulations and compounds, Northstar Polymers now handles polyurethane formulations for a much wider range of applications. Aside from high-performance polyurethane non-foam elastomers, Northstar Polymers formulates and produces raw materials for polyurethane foams, gels, adhesives, room-temperature-cure molding compounds, and prepolymer products as precursors for various chemical products.
Being a division of a privately owned company provides Northstar Polymers versatility. Northstar Polymers works with small and large size customers, helps developing best-fit material for each individual application, and provides materials in both small quantities as well as very large quantities.
