Northstar Polymers, a division of Tandem Products, Inc., traces its origins to Cargill, the largest privately-owned corporation in the U.S. In the early 1960s, Cargill faced significant wear issues in its export facilities, where bulk materials like corn and wheat caused severe abrasion to steel structures. In response, Cargill's chemical division was tasked with developing a solution. By 1965, a team of chemists successfully introduced the "Rhino Hyde" high-performance polyurethane anti-abrasion liner, revolutionizing the industry by dramatically reducing equipment wear. Rhino Hyde liners became a global standard across Cargill’s facilities and were soon adopted by competitors, mining companies, and other industries.
In the mid-1980s, Cargill spun off the division to the two chemists instrumental in developing Rhino Hyde. This led to the founding of Tandem Products in 1987. Building on this legacy, the company expanded its expertise beyond in-house applications, offering polyurethane raw materials to other industries. In 1997, Northstar Polymers was launched to meet the growing demand for polyurethane resin products.
